Summary

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village。 Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society。 So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her。

But Kya is not what they say。 A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies。 But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved。 Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens。

In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a profound coming of age story and haunting mystery。 Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens’s debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the child within us, while also subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps。

The story asks how isolation influences the behavior of a young woman, who like all of us, has the genetic propensity to belong to a group。 The clues to the mystery are brushed into the lush habitat and natural histories of its wild creatures。

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is an interesting murder mystery meets survival story meets romance book。I was recommended this book by my Physiotherapist and I figured。。。 why not read it? Shockingly enough, I NEVER get book recommendations! Especially books that I can easily get ahold of (I borrowed this one from the library! Yay! Support local libraries!)。 So, little me was like "Woo hoo! Book recommendation! Let's waitlist this at the library and get reading!"。 She absolutely loved thi Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is an interesting murder mystery meets survival story meets romance book。I was recommended this book by my Physiotherapist and I figured。。。 why not read it? Let's waitlist this at the library and get reading!"。 She absolutely loved this book and sang it's praises like no tomorrow (honestly, a few appointments worth of talking was all about this amazing book) but it just didn't sit with me as well as it did with her。Onto my review:This book is rather slow, which for me as a reader isn't great。 I hate slow moving books oh so much and want to get into the action。 While the pace was too slow for me, the writing was beautiful and intriguing。 Delia Owens' writing style is why I stuck with it instead of giving up。 Her descriptions, her understanding of people and the intriguing nature of the plot and story was amazing。 Delia has a talent, for sure。I did think the relationships in the book were kind of weird。 As a reader I understood why Kya's relationships were so torn and tattered, but sometimes it felt odd reading them。 The relationships didn't necessarily feel real。 The dialogue also felt kind of goofy sometimes because the characters sad everything they thought up。 Add in that the characters all felt kind of like a stereotype。。。 This was where the book lacked, in my personal opinion。I would love to know what happened to all of Kya's family, but alas we didn't。 It bothered me the entire novel and it always felt like there would be some kind of closure。 Yet, we didn't get too much of it。 Even the ending felt so。。。 sad? It felt like the book built up tension and got to an amazing climax only to realize it was running out of pages and had to rush to the ending (it reminded me of how Allegiant by Veronica Roth's ending felt for me)。 I wanted to see the life Kya was building and learn more about her adulthood instead of fast forwarding like an old VHS just to finish up the tape。 I'll be honest, this book was okay。 The writing and descriptions of nature are absolutely incredible and I loved it。 The pace was slow and the story waned as it got further。 I ended up losing interesting about 3/4ths of the way through the book and just muddled my way through。 I do want to read more by Delia Owens because this is a great step in the right direction。Three out of five stars。 。。。more

Me & my husband have been listening to this audiobook for the last couple months every time we are in the car for at least a couple hours, so it took about 4 months to finish it。 We really liked it and enjoyed the reader。 It's very easy to follow even after a month stretch of not being able to get back to it。 Me & my husband have been listening to this audiobook for the last couple months every time we are in the car for at least a couple hours, so it took about 4 months to finish it。 We really liked it and enjoyed the reader。 It's very easy to follow even after a month stretch of not being able to get back to it。 。。。more

So, despite being recommended numerous times, if this hadn’t been selected as part of a book club I’m part of, I don’t think I ever would have read this book。 But I’m glad I did。 It reads like a love letter to humanity as a member of the animal kingdom, peppered with local charm and historical tragedy。 The use of language was sumptuous and made it very hard to put down, I’d often find myself lingering and reading sentences numerous times just to appreciate them that little bit extra。 Thoroughly So, despite being recommended numerous times, if this hadn’t been selected as part of a book club I’m part of, I don’t think I ever would have read this book。 But I’m glad I did。 It reads like a love letter to humanity as a member of the animal kingdom, peppered with local charm and historical tragedy。 The use of language was sumptuous and made it very hard to put down, I’d often find myself lingering and reading sentences numerous times just to appreciate them that little bit extra。 Thoroughly recommend! 。。。more

Such a good book! I will not lie, I hated it in the beginning because it was quite boring。 However the words grow on you and you can't set the book down! I will say I hated the ending of it though, because it seemed as if the author needed a way to end the story so it just ends。 I so did not cry at the end *I SO did* 9/10 would recommend!! It was a little bit difficult for me to invest myself in the story in the beginning, I felt the introduction was way too long (and same with the ending, it just felt dragged)。 But the main story was pretty good and sometimes there was even some suspense, although I found some parts of the book unrealistic (like the development of the main character)

I think I expected too much in the beginning so took a while to see what the rave was about but very good read。 Refreshingly interesting with nature links。

'Where the crawdads sing' by Delia OwenThis book is simply beautiful。 Set in North Carolina, mostly during the 1960's we find Kya, known locally as 'The Marsh Girl'。 We find a girl who has only ever known abandonment, abandoned by all who were supposed to love and care for her。 We find a girl with more resilience and grit than one could ever imagine。 Kya manages to bring herself up against unimaginable circumstances。 It is, in every sense, a coming of age story。This is a story of being abandoned 'Where the crawdads sing' by Delia OwenThis book is simply beautiful。 Set in North Carolina, mostly during the 1960's we find Kya, known locally as 'The Marsh Girl'。 We find a girl who has only ever known abandonment, abandoned by all who were supposed to love and care for her。 We find a girl with more resilience and grit than one could ever imagine。 Kya manages to bring herself up against unimaginable circumstances。 It is, in every sense, a coming of age story。This is a story of being abandoned。 Of falling in love only to be abandoned again。 It's a story of growing up surrounded by prejudice。 Of learning over that love is possible and that is is beautiful when it is real。 All of this emerges in the most beautiful of settings, we are rewarded, page after page, with beautiful descriptions of a Marshland I now desperately want to visit。 Nature is everywhere in this book, it is what weaves it together。At some points in this book I cried, at others my heart raced with anticipation of what would happen next。 I loved every page, and I implore you to read it。#bookblog #ilovereading 。。。more

This was such a hyped-up book which made me nervous to read it and I found I initially that it was quite a slow start and my attention wasn’t hooked until about half way through。From that point, the narrative really sped up and I found myself invested in the characters and their stories and didn’t want to put it down。 I’d definitely say stick with it if you’re in a slump and it’ll pay off!

Extremely beautiful, an ode to nature and freedom mixed with a murder story, I devoured it and have nothing bad to say。 I wished it was longer so I could stay in Kya's marsh with her。 Extremely beautiful, an ode to nature and freedom mixed with a murder story, I devoured it and have nothing bad to say。 I wished it was longer so I could stay in Kya's marsh with her。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A fair few people recommended this book to me and one or two expressed less positive reactions。 I finally got around to it this week。 It tells the story of Kya, gradually abandoned by her family to survive alone in a shack in the marsh from about the age of ten。 The telling of Kya's backstory (1952-1969) is intercut with a police investigation of a body found in the marsh in 1969, and the two storylines come together in a 100-page courtroom drama that takes up the last quarter of the book。The pr A fair few people recommended this book to me and one or two expressed less positive reactions。 I finally got around to it this week。 It tells the story of Kya, gradually abandoned by her family to survive alone in a shack in the marsh from about the age of ten。 The telling of Kya's backstory (1952-1969) is intercut with a police investigation of a body found in the marsh in 1969, and the two storylines come together in a 100-page courtroom drama that takes up the last quarter of the book。The prose is engrossing, the setting very strong, and Kya makes for an intriguing and engaging character。 Her young adulthood takes an unexpected direction and the exploration of the possible murder as presented by both sides in the trial is very interesting。I really wasn't sure what to think about the very end, though。 And, the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get。 It's a masterful example of reader manipulation and I can appreciate the cleverness of the writing from a technical standpoint - but it doesn't stop me from feeling manipulated。 The way the story is put together prompts your brain to think about certain characters in certain ways (because of the standard tropes of storytelling) and then the rug is pulled out。 But I have to admit the clues were there - I just wasn't looking for them, so perhaps the book is right in making me feel foolish。。。I can't help being annoyed, though, which is a shame after thinking so highly of the book and really enjoying it up to the point。 。。。more

Loved this。 Beautiful story, and excellent writing too。 I won’t give details so as to avoid spoilers, but I miss this book (I read it about six months ago), and I know I’ll read it again。 It’s full of beautiful nature writing, tenderly drawn characters, and the warmth of the southern US (you can feel the heat and the atmosphere of the marsh)。。。 and the less warm aspects too。 A brilliant read。 I’ve recommended it many times already。

Poetic descriptions of a place I never knew existed transported me there completely。 This book made me think a lot about what's necessary for a fulfilled life。 Reading this in lockdown especially made me appreciate nature's quirks。 And how can a book about a girl living in a marsh be so gripping? Pirmoji knygos dalis buvo tokia stipri! Dėl jos ir palieku 5*。 O antroji dalis, ypač pabaiga, nuvylė, lyg paskubomis parašyta, neišpildė pirmosios dalies sukeltų lūkesčių。 Visgi susiskaitė neatsitraukiant。

I’m not much of a fiction person, especially ones that revolve around romance。 But there were enough elements at play in this book—a murder, appreciation for nature, insights into isolation—to keep my interest throughout。
